PARALLELS: Legacies in Flux

12 July 2025 - 02 August 2025
Gudang Kayu, Ubud

Exploring the cultural similarities between two distinct regions, ‘PARALLELS: Legacies in Flux’ will be a debut exhibition by the newfound platform, Ubud Art Ground.

This special showcase will feature the works of renowned artists from both Bali and China, exploring the cultural parallels between the two regions, with a particular focus on the history, development and evolution of their visual art disciplines prior to the influence of Western modernism.

Similar to China’s prominent ink painting history, Bali has developed its own traditional painting disciplines that are still upheld and practised until present, from the original Kamasan, to Batuan, Pengosekan and Ubud styles. In recent years, artists have been revisiting these traditional styles with contemporary approaches. From Bali, participating artists will include prominent names like I Made Djirna, Wayan Upadana, Mangku Muriati, Ni Nyoman Sani, Mangku Mura, Satya Cipta, I Made Gusti Deblog, Kuncir Sathya Viku, Made Wianta, Nyoman Gunarsa, Jemana Murti and Made Griyawan –and many more.

This large-scale exhibition will be the first project by Ubud Art Ground, which was founded to foster cultural exchange and artistic education between Indonesian and international artists and audiences. PARALLELS will also mark the inauguration of Batu Kurung Estate in Kedewatan, Ubud, a 5,000 square metre property being developed into a dedicated art space, with the first building, ‘Gudang Kayu,’ hosting the upcoming exhibition.

The exhibition will run from 12 July to 10 August 2025, from 10 AM to 6 PM at Gudang Kayu
