IKATAN by Hastosa: A Fashion Photography Exhibition at Bumi Kinar

Bright, vibrant, dynamic, in his latest photography exhibition, Hastosa portrays the relationship between humans and fabric, putting traditional fashion in a modern focus, showcasing its aesthetic relevance even in today’s world.

The exhibition, titled ‘Ikatan’, takes over Jingga Restaurant at Bumi Kinar Ubud, the colourful photographs and complementary displays of fabrics and attire juxtaposed against the pearl white walls of the restaurant. Hastosa, who is also the Creative Director of Menggah Agung, a traditional fabrics company, chose Jingga Ubud himself, a place where meals are prepared by local youth, with ingredients harvested from the gardens of Bumi Kinar and Kinar Village. The restaurant’s interiors and philosophy were the perfect match for the exhibition’s own colour and story.

‘Ikatan,’ meaning ‘a tie’ can refer to the bonds we have with others but also refers to the tying of threads, and thus perfectly encapsulates the message of the exhibition’s work. “We meet, intertwine, and become part of a beautiful tapestry – Each colourful thread reflects the essence and nature of a person—some harmonise naturally, while others form imperfect knots, yet all contribute to the beauty of the whole,” explain the exhibition’s curatorial notes.

As such, fashion is quite literally a tapestry that ties people into a culture, it bonds people through identity. IKATAN is thus a celebration of Bali’s tapestries. “To Hastosa, fashion is more than just grace or aesthetics, it is a medium that tells stories through the model’s expression, through intertwined threads and flowing fabrics.

Together with Hastosa in the “Ikatan” exhibition, Bumi Kinar celebrates the beauty of connection: between humans in their diversity, between humans and nature, and between humans and the universe.
