Ubud Art Ground #2_ Letters to Colour

Nestled on Kedewatan’s scenic hillside, Satyanara is a new centre for contemporary art, cultural exchange, and creative ideas. This integrated art centre connects art, cultures, knowledge, ideas, and communities across Asia.

Descending the estate’s gravel pathway, flanked by verdant rice fields, visitors arrive at the expansive art compound. The entrance sets the tranquil tone with a walkway featuring a pond and a cascading rock waterfall, accented by dark river stones and tropical foliage.

Inspired by a Balinese courtyard, Satyanara comprises several interconnected, sand-coloured buildings arranged around an open-air amphitheatre. The centre houses three gallery spaces, workshop spaces, studios, artist residencies, a café, and a retail area.

More than an art centre, Satyanara provides a space for artists and contemporary art communities in Bali to conduct research, build professional networks, and expand their access to the art market. Designed for visitors with varying levels of artistic interest, Satyanara presents a range of interactive programmes throughout the year, including professional development sessions, discussions, workshops, film screenings, and performances.

To mark its opening, Satyanara presents three exhibitions, each with its own curatorial identity, reflecting the centre’s commitment to exploring the interconnected themes of history, identity, culture, the environment, and local life.

Running from 22 October 2026 to 24 January 2027, ‘Ubud Art Ground #2: Letters to Colour’ explores the use of colour in Indonesian art, from traditional to contemporary practices, with Hendra Wijayanto contributing to the exhibition’s curatorial text. Inspired by the book Warna Bali, the exhibition demonstrates how colour is not merely a symbol but also a medium that shapes perception, expression, influence, and hybridity.

Another exhibition titled ‘Fluid Kinship: Watershed, Foodscape and Human Tectonics’, curated by Mella Jaarsma and Yipei Lee, explores how cultural landscapes have shaped history, geography, ethnocultural contexts, ecology, food systems, and human movement. Drawing on an extensive research project conducted at SUAVEART from 2024 to 2025, the exhibition encourages discussion about the evolving relationship between humans, the environment, and culture. Running from 22 October 2026 to 30 April 2027, it brings together perspectives from Iran, India, Indonesia, England, Italy, and Taiwan.

The third exhibition, A Brush Between Worlds, runs from 22 October 2026 to 30 September 2027. It traces the history of Chinese calligraphy and presents the Four Treasures of the Study – traditional tools used in calligraphy – alongside paintings and seal carvings from the personal collection of the late Professor Chou Chen, a prominent scholar. Serving as a memorial hall, the exhibition honours the enduring bond between teacher and disciple, highlighting how artistic traditions and cultural practices are passed down from one generation to the next.
