Four Seasons Resort at Jimbaran Bay recently invited Japanese sculptor, Toshihiko Hosaka, a master of the ephemeral art space, to create an art piece at the resort’s Sundara beach club. Travelling 3,400 miles from Japan, Hosaka-sensei worked round-the-clock against time and tides for five days straight to produce an original art piece utilising only sand, his bare hands, and sculpting tools.

Hosaka-sensei worked with materials such as wood and clay at University, but his love for sand sculpting has lead to a 22-year career as a sand artist. It has allowed him to travel to stunning locations around the globe and use the world as his gallery. A first-timer on the island of Bali, it was his first experience working close to the water’s edge and revealed that the rain and ocean tides were the biggest threats to his temporary art. He believes it is a reminder to enjoy the moment and respect the beauty and power of Mother Nature.

Standing three-metres tall, the sculpture, entitled ‘Mystical Mermaid’, was constructed as part of Sunburst 2019, the resort’s new series of events dedicated to Jimbaran’s beach lifestyle, and was unveiled on Sunday, 9 June 2019. The Sunburst event series holds the theme of ‘enjoying the moment’ at its core, which aligns with the global Four Seasons brand campaign #FSTakeYourTime.

“Jimbaran is Bali’s historic fishing village, famous for its three-mile beach, sunset seafood BBQs, spectacular sunsets and nearby surf breaks. We are blessed with the perfect playground and backdrop to create unique events that remind us all to slow down and appreciate the world around us,” said Nicolas Senes, Food & Beverage Director at Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay.

Sand art workshops were also held by Hosaka-sensei for Four Seasons guests as part of the sand art exhibition. The Kids Club staff also participated in the workshops,  allowing the resort to include sand art classes as part of the complimentary Kids Club program.

Keep an eye on upcoming Sunburst events in the coming months. Enjoy kite-making and kite-fighting during the kite festival on 25 August, participate in a beach cross-fit and pool party on 6 October, and find your zen during the SUP yoga on 22 December. All Sunburst events coincide with the popular Bali’s Longest Sunday Brunch at Sundara, where an eclectic selection of unlimited a la carte menu is available from 11 am – 5 pm.
